Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital ranked among
top ten in the country for diabetes and endocrinology

Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital has been ranked among the best in the nation for two of its sub-specialties in the 2010 edition of "America's Best Children's Hospitals," published online and in the August issue of U.S.News & World Report. The hospital's diabetes/endocrine disorders services ranked number seven in the nation, and its gastrointestinal care services were ranked number 26 in the country. A three-part blend of reputation, outcome and care-related measures such as the availability of physicians trained in pediatric sub-specialties, nursing care and advanced technology were criteria for selection in the 2010 "America's Best Children's Hospital's" issue.

19th annual sickle cell walkathon on Sept. 11

Yale-New Haven Hospital will sponsor the 19th annual walkathon for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Southern Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the East Rock Park (College Woods) in New Haven. Connecticut Liver Life Walk on Sept. 12

On Sunday, Sept. 12, join nearly 20,000 walkers from coast-to-coast in the fight against liver disease at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. The Connecticut Liver Life Walk, which is the national fundraising walk of the American Liver Foundation, raises critical funds to support research grants, public education, and advocacy related to liver disease. Join the Yale-New Haven Transplantation Center team, and be part of the largest fundraising and awareness event related to liver wellness.

Women’s sports medicine lecture on Sept. 15

The Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary kicks off its 2010 fall health education lecture series with "Playing it Safe — Ask Our Women’s Sports Medicine Expert" on Wednesday, Sept. 15. Join orthopedic surgeon Karen Sutton, MD, for a discussion about bone health, tips on how to prevent injury while being active, and the advantages to exercising during menopause. If most new moms would breastfeed their babies for the first six months of life, it would save nearly 1,000 lives and billions of dollars each year, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics. The United States incurs $13 billion in excess costs annually and suffers 911 preventable deaths per year because breastfeeding rates fall far below medical recommendations. Tommy Fund Family Day Oct. 3

The annual Tommy Fund Family Day will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven. The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer helps children undergoing cancer care at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital through research, support services and financial support to families in need. Participants can run a 5K road race, walk two miles or run in a .3 mile fun run for kids. The fun run begins at 10 a.m. and the 5K run and 2-mile walk at 10:30 a.m. Registration costs $20 before Sept. 30 and $25 after; children 10 and under are $10, and $15 after Sept. 30. Alzheimer's Memory Walk on Oct. 3
