DIAGNOSING CANCER

Cancer Services

Yale-New Haven Hospital has a full range of state-of-the-art cancer diagnostic services, including screening and diagnostic mammography, ultrasound, needle biopsies, surgical biopsy and pathology programs for all types of cancer. Sometimes, more than one diagnostic test is necessary to provide your cancer specialist with complete information.

Before you have a test, feel free to ask your doctor or health care provider any questions you have. Following is a sample of some questions to ask:

  • What is the test for?
  • What information can be learned from the test?
  • How long does it take?
  • Can it be done on an outpatient basis?
  • Who will perform the test?
  • When will the results be known?
  • How do I find out the results?

Getting Test Results from Yale Pathology
If you had tests done at Yale Pathology, you can now have your tests sent to you via the Internet. Depending on the length of the report and your method of connecting to the Web, it could take from 20 to 60 seconds for results to appear on your computer screen. If you are using a modem and telephone line, it will take longer than if you are accessing the Web site from a workstation connected directly to the Internet. In order to get results, you must fill out an application and have a signed confidentiality form on file with the Yale Pathology Department, or call (203) 785-2788 to make an appointment or to get your results.

Getting a Second Opinion
If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you have the right to get another medical opinion from a second doctor. This is especially true if an unusual form of cancer is involved.
