Cancer services
Choosing a cancer center
At Yale-New Haven Hospital, you not only receive care provided by one
of the nation's best hospitals, you also benefit from our close working
relationship with the Yale
Cancer Center, one of only 41 centers in the U.S. designated as comprehensive
cancer centers by the National Cancer Institute.
To qualify as a comprehensive cancer center, a facility must provide
the highest level of cancer diagnosis, treatment and research — a complete
range of services. We've met those high standards for cancer care since
1971. The Yale Cancer Center is the only comprehensive cancer center in
southern New England.
Prevention
Yale-New Haven continues to be a leader in the prevention of cancer through
educational programs and community intervention.
Early detection
Current research at the Yale Cancer Center seeks to develop new types
of screening tests to detect cancer earlier when treatment has
more success. Yale-New Haven patients are among the first to benefit.
Treatment
Yale-New Haven patients have first access to exciting new types of cancer
therapies, including stem cell and bone marrow transplants. Our multi-disciplinary
cancer team blends talents of Yale-New Haven Hospital staff and experts
from the Yale Cancer Center. If a consultation is required, you have easy
access to a broad range of specialists in medical oncology, radiation
oncology, surgical oncology and pathology, as well as oncology nursing, social
work, public health, nutrition, pharmacy and other supportive fields.
Research
Yale-New Haven physicians are leading the development of several new types
of cancer therapies that will revolutionize the treatment of these diseases.
Every day, researchers at Yale learn more about why cancers begin to grow,
what contributes to that growth, and how they can be stopped. They can
then apply this knowledge directly to improving the care of patients at
Yale-New Haven Hospital. Every year these breakthroughs have helped more
people survive cancer than ever before.
Treating the whole patient
At Yale-New Haven, our mission is to care for each patient with the greatest
dignity and respect possible. We also know that medications and procedures
are not enough in caring for our patients. We must meet all of the needs
of our patients, whether physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual.
Only then can be truly say we offer the best possible care to all of our
patients and that we do our best to improve the lives of every person
who puts his or her trust in our care.
The highest standards
A quest for knowledge and excellence is evident at every level of your
cancer care at Yale-New Haven, from the physicians and nurses caring for you, to the radiologists reading X-rays looking for signs of cancer, to the pathologists in the laboratory gauging the effectiveness of treatment, to the social worker and other staff reaching out with support and encouragement.
