Chest Pain Center

Yale-New Haven Hospital is nationally accredited as a "Chest Pain Center with PCI" (percutaneous coronary intervention) — a distinction that signifies better care, better prognosis, better quality of life, faster treatment and decreased length of stay in the hospital for patients with acute coronary syndromes / heart attacks. As Connecticut's only hospital to earn Cycle III accreditation, the highest designation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers, Yale-New Haven Hospital has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria.

In addition, a dedicated unit for patients who arrive at the hospital complaining of chest pain and may be at risk for a heart attack is staffed 24/7 by a skilled team trained to recognize and treat patients who are at a low- or moderate-risk for heart attack.

After an initial evaluation in the Emergency Department, patients are admitted to the Chest Pain Center (CPC), where they are closely monitored. Patients are assessed by a nuclear cardiology physician for an optimal diagnostic study. If doctors have ruled out a heart attack, patients undergo a cardiac stress test to assess coronary artery disease.

The CPC utilizes the most sophisticated technology, including nuclear perfusion imaging, for the evaluation of heart disease. The CPC has its own nuclear imaging machine right in the Emergency Department so patients can have a stress test throughout the day without having to be moved to another department. Each year, about 1,200 patients receive a stress test, making the CPC one of the busiest and more efficient centers in the region.
