Yale-New Haven Hospital treats carotid disease with both minimally invasive interventions such as angioplasty and stenting, and conventional surgery such as carotid endarterectomy, which are performed with some of the best results attainable in the country. Procedures can be performed under either general or local anesthesia, often according to patient preference.
The YNHH team tailors the treatment to the patient, and can perform combined surgical procedures with intraoperative stenting for complex multilevel lesions.
The goal of the carotid procedures is to provide safe and effective stroke prophylaxis. In addition, there is interest in the cognitive effects of improving cerebral blood flow. Investigators at Yale-New Haven have developed an ongoing program to evaluate these effects.
The full range of cerebrovascular and arch vessel bypasses is offered for patients requiring support for thoracic stent graft placement.
Although many patients are able to be diagnosed and treated wtih only minimally invasive testing such as duplex ultrasound, some patients require additional testing.Patient conference
Physicians with particularly difficult cases can request that their patients’ needs and situations be discussed at the monthly interdisciplinary cerebrovascular conference. A team of physicians, including vascular surgeons, stroke neurologists and interventional neuroradiologists, discuss all aspects of care, assuring that each patient has the treatment that is tailored to his or her needs.
