The Women's Heart Program

Women's Heart Program

The Women’s Heart Program at Yale-New Haven Hospital is committed to the cardiac health of all women.

Often considered a man’s disease, heart attack is the No. 1 killer of women, too. But unfortunately, women are often not as astute at recognizing the signs and symptoms of heart disease, and many instances go undiagnosed until the advanced stages. Symptoms are a bit different for women, too, and often are overlooked or misunderstood.

Launched in March 2001, the program promotes the cardiovascular health of women and continues to improve the overall outcomes for women with heart disease.

We strive to make sure that all women understand their risk of heart attack, and can recognize the signs and symptoms.

Spotlight on research

Yale investigators are currently conducting an NIH-funded comprehensive study comparing women age 55 and younger with heart attacks with 1,000 men. The VIRGO (Variation in Recovery: Role of Gender on Outcomes in Young AMI patients) multi-site study bridges disciplines from basic biology and clinical sciences to psychology and health services research. The study is also enrolling a group of young men with heart attacks. For more information about VIRGO, email virgo@yale.edu or visit the VIRGO study online, www.virgostudy.com.
