The eleventh annual Hackers for Hearts Golf Outing to benefit the Yale-New Haven Hospital Heart and Vascular Center will be held on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010 at New Haven Country Club in Hamden. The funds raised through this golf outing help provide direct financial assistance to patients affected by cardiovascular disease.

Representatives from Kohl's Care for Kids® visited Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH) this December, presenting a check for $123,461. As part of its partnership with the children's hospital since 2000, Kohl’s donations to YNHCH currently total approximately $1.2 million.
One hundred percent of the net profits from the sale of special Kohl’s Cares for Kids® merchandise from Kohl's stores in Branford, Brookfield, Fairfield, Hamden, Norwalk, Orange, Ridgefield, Trumbull and Wallingford is donated to the Kohl's Parenting Support Program, "Caring Parents Make Healthy Families," of the YNHCH Family Advocacy Center.
Zach Kirla of Deep River was all smiles as he received a holiday gift from Oakland A's pitcher and founder of Strike 3 Foundation, Craig Breslow.
In December 2009, Oakland A's pitcher and Trumbull resident, Craig Breslow, recently visited oncology patients at YNHCH. During his time at YNHCH, Mr. Breslow delivered holiday gifts, signed autographs and lifted the spirits of many patients.
Mr. Breslow is the founder of the Strike 3 Foundation. The Strike 3 Foundation was started in 2008 to heighten awareness, mobilize support and raise funds for childhood cancer research.

On Dec. 4, 2009, representatives from Spirit Halloween Superstore presented a check for $25,547.41 to the Child Life Department at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.

On Nov. 13, 2009, Maria Benedetto of Milford, CT, presented a check for $8,000 to the Yale-New Haven Breast Center with proceeds from the third annual, The Color Pink for a Cure Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser.
The Color Pink for a Cure fundraiser was held on Thursday, October 22, 2009, at Harborside Restaurant in Stratford, CT. The evening featured dinner, entertainment and raffles. Proceeds were directed to the Yale-New Haven Breast Center to help provide mammograms to uninsured/under-insured women in the community.

On Tuesday, October 20, almost 5,000 YNHH, Yale Medical School and Yale Cancer Center employees were welcomed into the soaring two-story lobby of the new hospital with refreshments and gifts to thank them for their hard work and commitment.
The next day, more than 500 donors, community leaders, medical staff, YNHH trustees, Yale-New Haven Health System and Yale University leadership, and media representatives joined Joan and Joel Smilow, the hospital’s major benefactors, as the building was dedicated. Dignitaries including YNHH President & CEO Marna Borgstrom, Joel Smilow, Governor M. Jodi Rell, Yale University President Richard Levin, and New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. spoke, and the Trinity Boys Choir performed. Following a ceremonial ribbon cutting, 130 guests joined the Smilows for dinner at the Union League Café.

On Oct.19, members of the band, Freeplay, along with two members of Elks Lodge 1784 of Westbrook, donated $4,000 to the Yale-New Haven Breast Center with proceeds from their First Annual, 7 Band Beach JamThe Beach Jam was held Sunday, August 2, 2009, at the Elks Lodge in Westbrook, CT with the headlining band, Freeplay and appearances by Jim Sheply Band, Smoke Bubbles Band, Third Rail, Mad Hat, The Sons and T-Ray.
The tenth annual Hackers for Hearts Golf Outing to benefit the Yale-New Haven Hospital Heart and Vascular Center was held on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009 at Oak Lane Golf & Country Club in Woodbridge.
The funds raised at Hackers for Hearts support the needs of cardiology care and services at Yale-New Haven Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Center.
This year’s event hosted over 95 golfers. Prior to the shotgun start, players enjoyed a luncheon and to cap off the day’s activities, a cocktail reception, silent auction, raffle and dinner were enjoyed by all.
Chris Velardi of News Channel 8 was Master of Ceremonies and emceed the evenings’ silent auction and raffle. Patsy Twohill and Karen Petrini co-chaired the fundraiser, which raised more than $20,000.

Kevin Sowers delivers the lunchtime presentation at the second annual Oncology Nursing Symposium in September.The eighth annual Oncology Nursing Symposium was held on Saturday, September 26, 2009. This conference is designed to help nurses caring for adult oncology patients to advance their knowledge in important areas of adult oncology nursing practice. Recognized clinical experts shared evidenced-based information and their clinical insights.

Starlight Children's Foundation, a international nonprofit organization dedicated to helping seriously ill children and their families, recently donated $25,000 to Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH).
Starlight Children's Foundations' Elaine Siver, executive director, and Michele Hall-Duncan, director of children's services, recently visited Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and saw the child life programs supported by the Foundation.
Starlight Children’s Foundation is a large contributor to the Arts & Enrichment programs offered to pediatric patients and their families during their time at YNHCH. The program helps create a safe, caring and healing environment for children and families at YNHCH.
The seventh annual Serve Love benefit for pediatric diabetes patients was hosted by The Farrington-Schaefer Family and Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. "A day of tennis and fun," was held on Sunday, August 23, 2009 at the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament in New Haven.
Participants enjoyed a brunch, silent auction and hours of thrilling tennis fun. Over 75 people attended the event, raising more than $19,000.

The first annual Friends of Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital Junior Golf and Tennis Tounament was held on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Oak Lane Golf & Country Club in Woodbridge.
The Friends of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital was founded in 1989 to address health and safety issues that affect the well being of children. A diverse group of volunteers from throughout the region focus on these issues through advocacy, outreach and educational efforts and by supporting pediatric research and clinical care.
This year’s event hosted over 56 players, ranging in ages from 8 to 17 years old. The day ended with a cookout sponsored by Hummel Brothers. and awards and prizes donated by local retailers from the greater New Haven area.
The event raised over $3,500 for Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and funds were designated to the Specialty Center at One Long Wharf which offers physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology services for children of all ages.

Friends Board Member Jocelyn Maminta of WTNH was Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. Vice-President of the Friends Board, Diane Molokotos chaired the fundraiser. The motorcycle run went from West Haven to Litchfield and back, with stops along the way for poker games. There were 171 riders from 34 towns in Connecticut; as well as 12 riders from Florida, Oklahoma, New Jersey and New York.
The West Haven Junior Woman's Club has been serving the community for over 74 years by providing over $500,000 dollars in goods, services and monetary donations. Their mission is to “Grow, Share, Give & Care.”

On July 7, 2009, Yale-New Haven Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford held a reception to recognize the generosity of Guilford resident, Carol Sirot.
Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Sirot, the patient registration and triage areas at Shoreline Medical Center were renovated, allowing staff to see patients more quickly and providing more patient privacy.
A local philanthropist, Mrs. Sirot takes a personal interest in the shoreline community. Her late husband, Gus Sirot, was a dermatologist affiliated with YNHH.

The seventh annual In Gratitude event was held on June 11, 2009, at Great River Golf Club in Milford. The evening of celebration was an opportunity for Yale-New Haven Hospital to thank its many generous donors for their contributions to the hospital.
More than 150 guests, including individual donors as well as representatives from volunteer fundraising groups, corporations and foundations enjoyed the reception.
Special guest speaker was Dr. Thomas Lynch, physician-in-chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven and Director of Yale Cancer Center. Marna Borgstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital, expressed her gratitude to those present for their commitment to YNHH.
On June 3, 2009, Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, donated $100,000 to establish a state-of-the-art surgical suite at the new Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven.
Covidien’s Jerry Liebrand, President, U.S. Region, Surgical Devices, said, “We are very fortunate that Covidien’s Surgical Devices global headquarters is located in the same community as the world-class institution of Yale-New Haven Hospital.”
Marna Borgstrom, President and CEO, Yale-New Haven Hospital, who accepted the check after addressing Covidien’s women’s leadership group recently stated, “Covidien’s generous gift toward this state-of-the-art surgical suite at Smilow Cancer Hospital will help us enhance surgical treatment and bring hope to patients with cancer. Covidien’s commitment to provide innovative surgical instruments contributes to better outcomes for cancer patients.”
Covidien’s Surgical Devices business unit, based in North Haven, is focused on developing innovative products through research and development.
The seventh annual Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital Telethon to benefit Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital was held on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The 2009 telethon was broadcast live from the studios of WTNH-News Channel 8 and MyTV9 from 7-8 p.m. and was hosted by WTNH newscasters Sara Welch and Keith Kountz.
Proceeds were designated to medical equipment purchases, staff training and education, and supporting the general needs of our various pediatric services such as Cardiac, Trauma, and Emergency services.

On February 9, Wiggin and Dana, a New-Haven based international law firm, donated $250,000 to Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. Members of Wiggin and Dana received a guided tour of the Smilow Cancer Hospital construction site.
The group was greeted by Marna P. Borgstrom, President and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital; Abe Lopman, Vice President and Executive Director, Smilow Cancer Hospital; and Kevin F. Walsh, Vice President of Development for YNHH.
On Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, Yale-New Haven Transplantation Center (YNHTC) and Yale-New Haven Hospital hosted a Transplantation and Organ Donation Awareness Fair for over 750 attendees.
The fair was held on the New Haven Green to celebrate life with our transplant recipients and their families as well as raise awareness for organ donation within Connecticut. Fair goers enjoyed free lunch, ice cream, cotton candy, kettle corn, face painting and music while learning about how to become organ donors.
A speaking program included President and Chief Executive Officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital, Marna Borgstrom, Mayor John DeStefano and the Director of YNHTC, Dr. Sukru Emre. Both adult and pediatric patients shared their personal transplant stories. Butterflies were released to honor deceased donors who had given the gift of life.
The fair also included participants from advocacy organizations such as Donate Life Connecticut, New England Organ Bank, National Kidney Foundation, American Liver Foundation, Department of Motor Vehicles, American Heart Association and American Medical Response.

Yale-New Haven Hospital hosted a Topping Off Ceremony and Reception to celebrate the installation of the final steel beams for Smilow Cancer Hospital. The event took place on Thursday, July 24, 2008.
Four beams were hoisted into place during the ceremony. One beam was signed by the construction workers and one was signed by students at Milford’s, Meadowside School. The final two beams were signed by YNHH employees, who shared their good wishes and remembered family and friends who had battled cancer on the beams that will last as long as the buildings.
Distinguished guests for the Topping Off Ceremony and Reception included President and Chief Executive Officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital, Marna Borgstrom; Joel and Joan Smilow; Mayor John DeStefano; Robert Alpern, MD, Dean, Yale School of Medicine and J. Robert Galvin, MD, Commissioner, Connecticut Department of Public Heath.
On May 1, 2008, Yale-New Haven Hospital hosted a press conference and reception to celebrate progress on Smilow Cancer Hospital. A press conference was held at the hospital and featured special celebrity guest speaker "As The World Turns" star and oral cancer survivor, Colleen Zenk Pinter, who received treatment at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The press conference was immediately followed by a reception attended by over 150 guests at Hopkins School in New Haven. The reception included comments from Dr. Robert Alpern, Dean of the Yale School of Medicine; Marna Borgstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital; Ms. Zenk Pinter; Dr. Yung Son Ms. Zenk Pinter’s physician; Dr. Richard Edelson, Chief, Dermatology, Former Director of Yale Cancer Center; and Marvin Lender, Co-Chair of the Smilow Cancer Hospital Campaign Committee. Guests were present to celebrate progress, partnership, and hope.
The co-chairs of the Smilow Cancer Hospital Campaign Committee, who include Louis and Debra Chênevert, Marvin and Helaine Lender, and Jonathan and Jody Bush, were saluted for their dedication to the project.
On April 25, 2008, Foxwoods Resort and Casino along with Yale-New Haven Hospital hosted a free head and neck cancer screening followed by a reception at Foxwoods.
Several physicians and clinicians from Yale-New Haven Hospital and private community practices donated their time to provide free cancer screenings to the employees of the casino. Foxwoods is one of the largest employers in the state. Over 200 head and neck screenings were conducted and the day was capped off with a reception co-hosted by Mashantucket Vice Chairman Kenneth Reels and Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The evening included comments from Vice Chairman Reels; President and Chief Executive Officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital, Marna Borgstrom; Chief of Otolaryngology, Dr. Clarence Sasaki and special celebrity guest, "As The World Turns" star and oral cancer survivor, Colleen Zenk Pinter. Zenk Pinter received treatment for her cancer at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The event represented a great partnership between Yale-New Haven Hospital, Yale School of Medicine, community physicians and Foxwoods Resort and Casino.
On April 3, 2008, Paul and Missy Fiorita, along with several couples from the Fairfield County area, hosted a reception in honor of Dr. Michael Apkon, Vice President and Executive Director of Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.
Over 100 guests attended the event at the Country Club of Darien. The event highlighted the outstanding care provided by Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.
The hosts of the reception hoped to spread the word about what a wonderful resource Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital is to the region.
