Employment Opportunities

Salary and benefits

Yale-New Haven Hospital offers an outstanding salary and benefits package.

Flexible benefits
A comprehensive flexible benefits package is offered to all full-time employees and those part-time employees who work 24 or more hours per week. Benefits begin the first day of the month after 45 calendar days. Benefits are purchased with pre-tax dollars, reducing employee income tax costs.

Employees can choose from:

  • Medical: Employees choose from two comprehensive plans that provide both in-network and out-of-network coverage. No referrals needed for doctors or specialists. Employees who show proof of other coverage can waive coverage and receive credits or cash back.
  • Dental: Choose from either Plus or Basic dental plan coverage. Preventive care and diagnostic services are provided in both plans, while the Plus Plan also includes major dental and orthodontic services.
  • Prescription drug coverage: Employees and dependents covered under either medical plan are covered by the prescription drug program. Employees can choose to purchase prescriptions from participating pharmacies or through mail order (up to a 90-day supply) at a reduced cost.
  • Life insurance: After the first of the month following 45 days of employment, employees are provided life insurance coverage equal to their annual salary. Additional insurance up to three times the annual salary can be purchased using pre-tax dollars.

Flexible spending accounts (FSA)
Before-tax dollars may be set aside to pay for qualifying health expenses or dependent day care expenses. The hospital matches 5 percent of what an employee elects to contribute to the FSA. Under IRS regulations, any unused funds are forfeited at yearend.

  • Health Care Spending Account: Up to $5,000 each year may be set aside tax-free to pay for out-of-pocket health-related expenses, including co-pays, deductibles, dental and vision care expenses.
  • Dependent Care Spending Account: Up to $5,000 each year may be set aside tax-free to pay for child day care and other qualifying dependent day care expenses.

Paid time off (PTO)
Full-time and part-time employees who work 24 or more hours per week are eligible for paid time off. Employees accrue a specific number of days off per year (28 to 40 days) based on length of service and position classification. PTO includes time off used for sick days, vacation, holidays or personal days. Annual cash-in of PTO is available and the amount eligible for cash-in is based on length of employment.

Retirement security program
Cash account pension plan: The pension plan is paid by the hospital. Annual contribution to each employee's plan is based on years of service – 3 to 8 percent of pay – plus annual interest credit. There is a lump sum distribution option.

Tax-sheltered annuity program: Employees can set aside their own money for retirement on a before-tax basis (up to $12,000 for 2003). Partial vesting for Yale-New Haven Hospital matching contribution starts at two years of service, with 100 percent vesting at five years. There are more than 100 investment funds from which participating employees can choose. Employees who contribute at least 5 percent of their annual salary receive a hospital match of 3 percent.

Salary continuation plans
Extended sick leave (ESL): Employees scheduled to work at least 24 hours per week with one year of service are eligible for ESL coverage. After a two-week wait, this plan pays 60 percent of base salary for the period of disability not to exceed 24 weeks in a 52-week period.

Long-term disability: Employees are automatically covered by long-term disability after completing three years of continuous full-time employment. The plan provides a benefit of 60 percent of base salary following a six-month qualification period.

Employee referral program
Employees who refer a selected allied health or nursing professional to Yale-New Haven Hospital for employment are eligible to receive a $1,500 bonus.
