Maternal Special Care UnitYale-New Haven has the expertise and the staff ready to help if you need extra care while you are pregnant. The 18-bed Maternal Special Care Unit on West Pavilion 10 at YNHH cares for women who have special needs during pregnancy or after delivery. Maternity patients might be admitted to this unit for premature labor, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other medical problems that may affect pregnancy. While most women are admitted during their last trimester, other women are admitted as early as 20 weeks, coming and going several times during their pregnancy, or staying the duration. Women who are 19 weeks pregnant or less are usually admitted to the Gynecology Unit on West Pavilion 9. Nurses provide not only expert care, but also emotional support that is so important for you and your family. Pregnancy loss If you have suffered more than one miscarriage, you may benefit from an evaluation by your obstetrician. Yale's Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Service is also available. Women who experience pregnancy or infant loss may benefit from the support of others who share this experience, through an organization known as Hygeia. Hygeia, one of the most enduring programs of compassion, empathy and support for families who lose a child during pregnancy or soon after birth, offers online resources, a bereavement resource library and peer-to-peer support groups, held in New Haven, Guilford and Westport.
