Preparing for a hysterectomy.

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus—a common procedure that can significantly improve quality of life and even save the lives of some women. While it is a major operation, the risks are among the lowest of any major surgery, and healthy women generally recover without serious problems.

At Yale-New Haven Hospital, you have the added advantage of recovery in the modern West Pavilion on a private floor dedicated to women's health. You will stay in one of 36 private rooms, where you will have a private bath and accommodations for one guest to stay overnight.

Knowing what to expect from a hysterectomy can make a tremendous difference in your experience. You will learn more if you:

  • Attend a free, informal hysterectomy class led by a gynecology nurse. The class is held every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon in the conference room of the 9th Floor West Pavilion (Children's Hospital). Here you can meet other women who will be having similar surgeries. The class includes a tour of the floor you will stay on, a slide show that takes you step-by-step from your arrival to discharge and a discussion of options for pain control, post-surgery exercises, nutrition and more. Call (203) 688-9355(WELL) to register. For questions or cancellations, call (203) 688-7992.
