AIDS Care Program
The Yale-New Haven Hospital AIDS Care Program provides free HIV confidential and anonymous testing as required by the Centers for Disease Control and the Connecticut Department of Public Health. We offer rapid testing and the results are provided in 20 minutes.
Types of Tests
Confidential HIV Testing
The HIV counselor records the person's name along with the results of his/her test in a medical record. People with access to test results include the person’s medical provider, the State Health Department, possibly others. Patients who are ill are strongly encouraged to take the confidential test, as information can be made available to healthcare providers.
Anonymous HIV Testing
The HIV Counselor does not request any identifying personal information. Only the person who is having the test is informed of the results.
Testing Procedures
Traditional
HIV counseling and testing requires that very specific and detailed information be shared and gathered in the pre-test counseling session. Individuals may also choose their test to be confidential or anonymous, unless medically contraindicated.
Routine
HIV testing requires a limited risk assessment prior to performing the HIV test. Routine HIV tests are offered in the Yale-New Haven Hospital Emergency Department to patients seeking medical attention, and on the Community Health Care Van. All routine HIV tests are done confidentially.
For information or to make an appointment, please call (203) 688-3184.
