From the Nurse's Desk
For good health, keep your hands clean
What are the two most important discoveries that led to a decrease in
infection and illness?
- The invention of the flush toilet.
- Learning that washing hands prevents germs from spreading.
A simple thing like good hand washing can reduce the spread of illness in
your home and school. You can't just stick your hands under water and declare
them clean!
- Use soap, rub your hands together for several seconds (count to 10),
and rinse them well.
- After you wash your hands, dry them well with a towel and use the
towel to turn off the faucet.
- If you use a paper towel, throw it in the trash.
When to wash your hands:
- Any time they get dirty.
- Before you eat.
- After playing outdoors.
- After you go to the bathroom.
- After playing with animals.
- After sneezing or coughing, if your hands are near your nose or mouth.
Activity
Ask your parents to watch you practice good hand-washing.
