From the Nurse's Desk
Swim safely
Cool water on a hot day is a good way to beat the heat.
When swimming in a new place, think "Feet First, First Time." Many serious
injuries occur when people dive "head first" into unknown water and their
head hits the bottom or hits a rock. Jump in "feet first" the first time
you swim in a new place. Check how deep the water is, and look for rocks
or other objects hidden below the surface. By exploring first, you protect
your head and neck.
Other safe swimming tips include:
- Walk around swimming pools. It's too easy to slip and fall.
- Do not push others into water. We need to think before we swim.
- Always have an adult who can swim with you.
- Stay out of the water during lightning storms. You could receive a
giant shock.
- Take swimming lessons.
Swimming is great fun and good exercise. Stay safe while staying cool.
