Yale-New Haven Hospital news release Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Kohl's help make healthy familiesNEW HAVEN — Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH), in conjunction with Kohl's Department Stores, celebrated the hospital's "Caring Parents Make Healthy Families" program with a festive holiday gathering and check presentation at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. Created in 2006, the "Caring Parents Make Healthy Families" program is a community outreach and parenting education program. Kohl's officials and employees, headed by district manager Carl Keating, joined YNHH President and CEO Marna P. Borgstrom, and Michael Apkon, M.D., vice president and executive director, YNHCH, in accepting a check for $113,246 toward the hospital's parenting mentor program. The money comes from the Kohl's Cares for Kids program, in which Kohl's stores from across the country sell special merchandise and donate 100 percent of the net profits to programs that benefit children's health and education opportunities in Kohl's markets. Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital has been one of those beneficiaries for the past five years. "We are very proud and honored that through the tremendous generosity of our partners at Kohl's, the programs here at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital have benefited in so many ways for the past seven years," said Marna Borgstrom. "It is because of their continued philanthropy that programs like "Caring Parents" are able to make the difference in so many lives." "Without a doubt, this is the best part of my job, helping to bring so many smiles to so many faces," said Carl Keating of Kohl's Department Stores. "With today's gift, we are very proud to say that Kohl's has donated nearly $1 million to Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. We are proud of our alliance with Yale-New Haven and the great work being done here every day." Since the partnership began in 2001, the "Caring Parents Make Healthy Families" program has developed nearly a dozen child-rearing brochures in English and Spanish to help parents deal with common childhood issues. Through increased public awareness, the campaign's goal is to ensure that Connecticut's children are safe, healthy and growing strong YNHCH works through pediatricians, community organizations, schools and health fairs to reach Connecticut parents. Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
