Yale-New Haven Hospital news release East meets West at Yale-New Haven HospitalNEW HAVEN —Members of Yale-New Haven Hospital's cardiac surgery department recently shared their medical expertise with two visiting Russian fellows who returned to their native homeland, having seen the best of American medicine.
Alexey Dyachkov, M.D., an anesthesiologist from St. Petersburg, and Dmitry Kondratyev, M.D., a cardiac surgeon from Murmansk, participated in an intensive one-month cardiac fellowship sponsored by the Almazov Foundation of St. Petersburg, Russia and Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH). The Almazov Foundation was created by Maria Prokudina, M.D., Ph.D., of St. Petersburg, to help young Russian physicians learn new techniques from their American counterparts that they can share with their colleagues in Russia. YNHH partnered with the Almazov Foundation earlier this year to offer a one-month fellowship to up to 14 eligible Russian physicians trained in surgery, anesthesia and/or cardiology. "This is a great opportunity for this medical center to share its expertise with a country that has tremendous needs," said Peter Herbert, M.D., YNHH's chief of staff. Guilford resident Michael Dewar, M.D., attending cardiac surgeon at YNHH, coordinator of the intercontinental partnership and member of the Almazov board said, "We're providing short-term intensive educational opportunities to junior staff physicians and surgeons." Dr. Dewar has spent a week of his yearly vacation since 1995 as a medical missionary in St. Petersburg, helping train cardiac surgeons. In that time, he has operated on more than 100 patients. To date, this unique partnership between YNHH and the Almazov Foundation has provided six Russian cardiac fellows the opportunity to observe cardiac surgery, patient care and research. Each of the fellows underwent a selective application process that includes fluency in English. All of the applicants have come from northwest Russia. "I applaud Dr. Dewar for taking the initiative and getting this program going," said Dr. Herbert. Yale-New Haven Hospital, in New Haven, Conn., is a 944-bed not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale University School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the United States in 1826, and today the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
