NEW HAVEN — Yale-New Haven Hospital announced that Abe Lopman has been appointed vice president and executive director of the new Smilow Cancer Hospital.

Lopman joins Yale-New Haven after four years as the executive director of the Regional Care Network at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York where he directed the strategic and daily operations of the Memorial network of cancer care facilities throughout the metropolitan area.

"Abe brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge in leading a cancer care network. We are extremely pleased to have him join our team to lead operations at our new cancer hospital," said Marna P. Borgstrom, YNHH president and CEO. "As Abe begins his position here, he will be integral in the preparation for the opening of the new cancer hospital late next year."

Prior to joining Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Lopman served as vice president of Acute Care Operations at the Orlando Regional Healthcare system where he planned, built and operated the MD Anderson Cancer Center-Orlando. He has also held positions at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and Montefiore Medical Center in New York.

Lopman earned his B.A. in biologic sciences from City University of New York and an M.B.A. from the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

Yale-New Haven's new Smilow Cancer Hospital is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in late 2009. The 14-story facility will contain nearly 500,000 square feet, and will include 112 inpatient beds, outpatient treatment rooms, expanded operating rooms, infusion suites, diagnostic imaging services, and a specialized women's cancer center (including the Yale-New Haven Breast Center and the GUN Oncology Center) as well as a floor each for diagnostic and therapeutic radiology.
