Cancer statistics
- Nearly nine million people are currently living with cancer in the United States.
- Approximately 9,000 children will be diagnosed with a new case of childhood cancer this year.
- In his or her lifetime, one in two men, and one in three women develop cancer. Virtually everyone knows someone who has cancer and also knows someone who died of cancer.
- An estimated 48 Connecticut residents, 12 of whom live in the New Haven area, are diagnosed with cancer each day.
- An estimated 20 Connecticut residents, five from New Haven, die of cancer each day.
- 7,000 Connecticut residents die of cancer each year.
- Nearly 3,000 Connecticut women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year; 530 will die.

A comprehensive Cancer Center for patients
- Yale-New Haven Hospital currently treats cancer patients in six different hospital facilities. A new comprehensive clinical Cancer Center maximizes the hospital's ability to integrate in one place science and cancer care, increase efficiencies and create the best possible environment for multidisciplinary care.
- A comprehensive Cancer Center ensures access to world-class cancer care for all patients whose lives depend on it; brings together the hospital and medical school's best minds to develop new methods to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer; and will attract additional world-class talent to Yale-New Haven Hospital and the New Haven community.
Economic benefits to the community
- 350 construction jobs at peak
- Up to 400 new, permanent full-time Cancer Center jobs, with above-market wages and benefits.
- More than $4 million in building permits to the city of New Haven.
- An additional $3 - 4 million annual payments in PILOT (Payment In Lieu Of Taxes) to the city of New Haven.
Cancer Center facts
- 14-story building, 497,000 sq.ft., at cost of approximately $430 million.
- 112 inpatient beds, expanded operating rooms and radiology services, women's cancer center.
- Can meet expected 20 percent plus growth rate in patient demand in coming decade.
