Mission
The mission of the Department of Religious Ministries is:
- To provide spiritual care to patients, their families and friends, the hospital staff and the institution as a whole;
- To provide education and training through Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE, Inc.) programs;
- To participate in hospital-based and interdisciplinary education programs; and
- To foster relationships with the faith communities of the Greater New Haven area.
Scope of service
Chaplains provide the following services:
- Faith sensitive and specific pastoral ministries to the sick and their families and friends, including:
- Pastoral visits to patients and families in inpatient units and clinics, response to referrals from physician and nursing staff and drop-in visits
- On-call response to deaths, trauma or other critical incidents and requests
- Emergency administration of sacraments, including anointing, baptism and communion
- Worship and prayer services on a weekly basis, holy days and other days of remembrance
- Spiritual care and support of the staff, including:
- Participation in patient care meetings, family meetings and interdisciplinary team meetings
- Spiritual and values counseling
- Support groups and memorial services
- Quality education and training for chaplain interns, chaplain residents and health care providers through ACPE-accredited Clinical Pastoral Education.
- Community outreach and support through local clergy and community organizations
Contacting a Chaplain
Contact a chaplain by calling the Department of Religious Ministries at (203) 688-2151 from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Outside of these times, contact the on-call chaplain through the page operator at (203) 688-3111 (24 hours). Patients in the hospital may contact a chaplain or arrange for sacramental support through the nursing staff.
Worship and Prayer
The Interfaith Chapel, located on the first floor of the South Pavilion near the Atrium, is open 24 hours a day for prayer and meditation.
Sunday worship services are held regularly. A Roman Catholic Mass is celebrated from 9:30 - 10:00 a.m. and a Protestant Worship Service is held at 10:15 - 10:45 a.m. every Sunday in the Chapel.
Chaplain staff
The Department is staffed with board-certified chaplains from a variety of faith traditions who are also trained in inter-faith care. In addition, care is provided by chaplains in training and CPE-trained pastoral care associates.
