The Section of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Surgical Emergencies combines leading-edge clinical care, education and training of future surgeons, with the most advanced research to improve the management of trauma patients. The Section has three clinical missions:

  • To care for all trauma patients admitted to Yale–New Haven Hospital, which is the regional Level 1 Trauma Center for Southern Connecticut and the only trauma center in the state to be verified by the American College of Surgeons for both adult and pediatric patients.
  • To manage all critically ill surgical patients through its critical care services (the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the Intermediate Care Unit).
  • To treat patients with surgical emergencies both in the Emergency Department and in the hospital.

These clinical missions are performed by a dedicated group of trauma and surgical critical care physicians who provide around the clock, in-house coverage 365 days a year. In addition to its clinical responsibilities, the Section is continuously involved in multiple educational and research missions.

The Section trains three Critical Care Fellows per year as well as residents in surgery, anesthesia and emergency medicine, medical students, nurses, and pre-hospital providers. Finally the Section is also involved in multiple facets of trauma and critical care research, with ongoing clinical trials in several areas. Our programs include:
