Research Program
The Section of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Surgical Emergencies is actively involved in both clinical and basic science research in trauma and critical care-related issues as follows:
Kimberly A. Davis, M.D. Dr. Davis’ research interests include post-traumatic respiratory failure, and the diagnosis, management and prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Additionally, Dr. Davis is interested in further elucidating the triggers for the inflammatory cascade after trauma, and its contribution to the development of systemic inflammatory response syndrome.
Lewis J. Kaplan, M.D. Dr. Kaplan’s research interests include the significance of unmeasured ions in critically ill patients, the clinical testing of resuscitation fluids including the oxygen-carrier HBOC, and the development of strategies to reduce transfusion. Additionally, he is designing a study to test the efficacy of procoagulant dressings for intra-operative use. Dr. Kaplan also investigates the effect of different antibiotic regimens on the emergence of resistant pathogens in the Intensive Care Unit.
Melissa Perkal, M.D. Dr. Perkal is interested in outcomes in surgical intensive care, particularly for the veteran and geriatric patient populations.
Stanley H. Rosenbaum, M.D. Dr. Rosenbaum, Director of the Anesthesiology Critical Care Program, is interested in the incidence and detection of perioperative myocardial injury. In particular, he is examining the efficacy of troponin I (TnI) and CK-MB levels for the diagnosis of perioperative ischemia. Dr. Rosenbaum has also set out to determine the sedative and analgesic sparing effect of music in the ICU.
