About Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital
Yale-New Haven Psychiatric
Hospital (YNHPH) provides specialized psychiatric care to adults and adolescents. Psychiatric care for children is provided under the auspices of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital.
YNHPH was formally established in June 2000 when Yale-New Haven Hospital
acquired the assets of the former Yale Psychiatric Institute (previously
owned by the Yale University). The expertise of each organization was
brought to bear to make Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital a leading
center for comprehensive clinical care in the treatment of mental illness.
Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital includes a 73-bed psychiatric inpatient
facility and a variety of intensive outpatient
specialty programs. All together, YNHPH offers a full spectrum of
innovative and advanced treatments to adolescents, adults and geriatric
patients with psychiatric and substance abuse problems.

Patient care
Yale-New Haven psychiatric staff provide services to all ages of patients,
with specialized programs for dual diagnosis disorders (substance abuse
and psychiatric), adolescent and geriatric psychiatric patients. See Patient

Research and teaching
Affiliated with the department of psychiatry at
the Yale University School of Medicine, the Psychiatric Hospital
is a center for research and education in behavioral health.
The hospital has training programs in psychiatry, psychology, social
work, occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation and nursing.
It is also a research center conducting studies in areas such as:
- Hallucinated voicesexamining
the neurobiological basis of these hallucinations and explores an
investigational treatment using transcranial magnetic stimulation.
